Top 10 Films About Porn

When it came time to divvy up the Top 10 lists, I, being the resident office film nerd, immediately jumped on this one. And without hesitation I knew what was going to be number 1. As for the other nine spots, well, for those I had to sit down and think about all the movies I had seen that dealt with pornography in some way. The list ended up being pretty lengthy at first, but I made some cuts and shuffled things around and as I like to say to women as I pull down my pants, "I got 10 for you!"

10. Zack and Miri Make a Porno

This is the only film on the list that I actually haven't seen. However, I am a fan of some of Kevin Smith's films ("Chasing Amy" is one of my favorites) and my coworker April Scott told me I had to have this one on the list, so here it is.

9. Wonderland

Not to be confused with the good Michael Winterbottom film of the same name, this "Wonderland" is the one starring Val Kilmer as John Holmes. The film takes place in the early '80s. With Holmes' career and fame behind him he is a junkie and a desperate man. The film's title is taken from the central event of the film - the Wonderland murders for which Holmes was a key suspect.

8. Porn Star: The Legend of Ron Jeremy

Now we move from John Holmes, the biggest name in porn in the '70s and '80s, to the biggest name in porn since then, Ron Jeremy. This is a very interesting documentary about the man nicknamed "The Hedgehog."

7. The Girlfriend Experience

Okay, so the great Steven Soderbergh's film is technically a movie about prostitution rather than pornography, but it does star porn superstar Sasha Grey, so it counts. This is a low-budget, semi-improvisational film directed, shot and edited by Soderbergh and starring Miss Grey as a high-priced escort.

6. The Notorious Bettie Page

I am sure most of you know the name Bettie Page, but you probably (like me before I saw this film) don't know much about her life story. It all seems pretty tame now, but back in the 1950s Bettie Page was considered quite naughty. Mary Harron, who also directed the great film "American Psycho," directs this quality bio pic about the most famous pin-up model of all time.

5. Amateur

Independent filmmaker Hal Hartley has made some good films that most people have never heard of, including "Henry Fool," "Flirt" and the one that made #5 on my list, "Amateur." The film is a comedic crime drama. So where is the "porn," you ask? Well, in the film Isabelle Huppert plays Isabelle, an ex-nun waiting for her mission from God, but in the meantime she is making a living writing pornography. Isabelle then meets Thomas who is an amnesiac and doesn't remember that he used to be a pornographer responsible for turning his wife into the world's most notorious porn queen.

4. The People vs. Larry Flynt

From Milos Forman, the director of "Amadeus" and "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest," comes this great film that tells the story of Larry Flynt, the man behind Hustler Magazine. This is a biopic, but the title of the film is in reference to Mr. Flynt's many court cases and the central story of the film is Flynt's crusade in defense of free speech.

3. Humpday

Two guys are at a party. They are old friends who haven't seen each other in a long time. One is the free spirit traveler, never-settled-down guy and the other has gone a different route and has a wife and a house and is trying to make a baby. At the party, everyone gets to talking about the "hump fest" artistic porn festival that they are going to be producing work for and these two guys - pretty drunk and high at this point - decide that it would be great art if they (two very straight dudes) were to make a movie of them having sex with each other.

As an aside, "mumblecore" is a subgenre of American independent film and "Humpday" is one of its best films (and just a great film regardless of genre). Another great one is "The Puffy Chair," directed by the Duplass brothers. And to bring it full circle Mark Duplass is one of the stars of "Humpday."

2. Auto Focus

Paul Schrader is probably best known for writing or co-writing the screenplays for "Taxi Driver" and "Raging Bull" - and rightly so. But he has also done some directing and one of those films is the great and not widely seen "Auto Focus."

The film is about Bob Crane - yup, the star of the show "Hogan's Heroes." But did you also know that Crane became friends with a man named John Henry Carpenter who was an electronics expert and involved in the then-very-new home-video market? Did you also know that Crane became a sex addict, obsessed with sleeping with as many women as possible and filming his encounters, usually with Carpenter participating? This is a dark and compelling film with a great performance by Greg Kinnear as Bob Crane.

1. Boogie Nights

Not only is "Boogie Nights" the best film about porn, it is one of my favorite films of all time. PT Anderson is the best director working today and this was just his second film after "Hard Eight" and then followed by "Magnolia," "Punch Drunk Love," "There Will Be Blood" and last year's "The Master."

"Boogie Nights" tells the story of Eddie Adams (Mark Wahlberg's best performance of his career) who became known as Dirk Diggler and the movie follows his path through the porn industry in the 1970s and '80s. The Dirk Diggler character was inspired by John Holmes and, to bring this back to #9 on the list, there is a great scene in the film that is obviously a take on the Wonderland robbery/murders.

There you have it, folks. The Top 10 Films about Porn! I hope I have given you some good movies to check out and, even better, made you aware of some you had never even heard of. So, as I say to women after I've slept with them, "That was fun. Please don't use the good towels to wipe your face and can I get your sister's phone number before you leave?"

I'm amazed there was no mention of a great- and one of the first- mainstream films about porn:"HARDCORE". It starred George C. Scott as a Calvinist minister from the midwest, who goes to L.A., searching for his runaway daughter, whom he discovers, is in the porn biz! A CLASSIC!
