Back in January a Toronto policeman, Michael Sanguinetti, was talking to a personal security class and said that "Women should avoid dressing like sluts in order not to be victimized." Well, the women of Toronto had heard enough! And 10 weeks after the cop's idiotic remarks, thousands of people (mostly women) were parading down Toronto's city streets in the first Slut Walk

The Slut Walk didn't end with the Toronto walk. In fact, that one act started a chain reaction and within days women came together to organize more Slut Walks across North America, Australia and Britain (there might be one coming to your city soon).

These women had every right to be angry by the policeman's comments. In fact, every woman should be. And what, in my mind, is even scarier than the cop's remarks is that they imply a "blame the victim" attitude that is more prevalent than you might think.

After reading about the comments and the protests, I did a quick search on the subject and discovered a recent survey that found that more than half of women feel that victims of sexual assault should take responsibility for it. And one in 10 people surveyed thought that dancing provocatively, flirting or wearing revealing clothing made them partly to blame. There is that word "blame" again - directed right at the victims!

Maybe it's just me, but I would think that changing these kinds of prevailing societal ideas and false beliefs, rather than perpetuating them, should be the goal of those meant to serve and protect us!
