Tawdry Times Past Terminates Teacher

I remember my first day at school I had the biggest crush on my teacher. She was young and pretty, wasn't my mother and was a miss rather than a missus. I was so heartbroken when she left my class to get married (how old school was that). Times have changed and yet conservative values still reign in educating our future young Republicans.

In my young eyes, that first teacher, Miss Leah was perfect but as I got older, I realized that teachers, just like parents are not without flaws, present or past. According to Fox News (05/05/06), Tericka Dye, a Kentucky teacher has been fired for starring in an adult film 10 years ago.

"Your presence in the classroom would cause a disruption to the educational process," McCracken County Schools Superintendent Tim Heller wrote in a letter to Dye. "I fear there would be less than a serious approach to schooling by students who viewed the video or know about it."

I wonder how many students watch enough decade-old porn to have recognized Dye before the story hit the media. She hardly strikes me as someone all the young boys (or any of the girls for that matter) would lust over, regardless of her pornographic credentials.

Tericka has countered with an interesting defense in my estimation. Besides expressing regret, she says she was suffering from an undiagnosed bipolar disorder. Shortly after her foray into adult films, she joined the army and got things straightened out. An undiagnosed bipolar patient toting a gun, I guess soldiers are screened less than teachers are. At any rate, insanity may trump smuttiness but not necessarily in a good way.

Meanwhile, some loyal parents have held a rally in support of Dye and the Kentucky Education Association has hired a lawyer that may challenge the school superintendent's decision.

Growing up I had so many teachers that were heavy drinkers, hated their jobs and their students with no attempt to hide their contempt for others or disguise their own self-loathing. In the end, I'm not sure if a few former porn stars couldn’t have taught me just as well as the angry alcoholics did…
