I haven't heard a man refer to a woman as a "slut" since high school. At least not in an insulting way. Oh sure, angry men-men who've just been dumped, men who've been hurt-use the word quite a bit, and so do men in the throes of passion (but with caution. She might not like it even then). However, as a description of a woman's morals, I just never hear it very much from men. I hear it a lot more from women.

I grew up where being a sexually active woman was terribly desirable and more likely to be pursued than condemned and avoided, but it seems to me that it's women who keep the word alive and are first to use it against each other. Women know very well who the "sluts" are and aren't afraid to tell you. If someone tells you some woman's a slut, it's probably either an angry ex-boyfriend or another woman. Who else would care?

More than men, women have a double standard when it comes to sex. They want it, of course, and yet they're terribly afraid of being branded with the S-word. A man might not care what other people say about him, but women are by nature more socially sensitive, and reputation means a lot. How to get what they want without being tagged as a whore or a slut is a big problem for them.

I see this a lot in porn, where one of the most popular female fantasies involves being forced to play the slut. It's simple really - she gets all the sex she can want, with none of the responsibility for her actions. No one can call her a "slut".
