They aren't as ancient as I thought.

It appears that the first real pornographic movie wasn't made until the seventies. I was actually kind of shocked to read that. I recall in a film class that many early silent movies were geared toward erotic shots of women in stockings lifting their skirts and showing their nickers, and I could have sworn that eventually these types of films made their way into the burlesque theatre. I had no idea that the first porn film with a plot didn't receive a general theatrical release until 1970. That movie was called Mona: the virgin nymph, from Bill Osco, who I assume is more famous for his association with Flesh Gordon (1974), which has got to be one of the most hilarious porn movies in my recollection.

I really can't say that I've heard of the movie called Mona, but then the film was probably tame in comparison to other films in the seventies like Deep Throat (1972). Still, film had been created in the latter part of the 19th century and so it's shocking to me that a narrative porn film didn't make it to the theatres for what? About 80 years?

The late sixties and early seventies seemed to be years with a lot of erotic and pornographic firsts. It was also in this era that the most profitable 3-D film in history was released, and you guessed it! It was a porn flick. Okay, so it was a softcore movie, but still I thought 3-D was invented long before that year, so I was a bit surprised that one hadn't been made before The Stewardesses (1969).

Before the seventies, it seemed that there was very little in the way of storyline porn, in fact most X-movies, at least prior to the peepshows that were popular in the 1960's, were illegal underground films that were distributed by travelling salesmen for bachelor parties and thus was the infamous stag film born.

Finding out all this information is just fascinating to me, but it really goes to show that I'm in serious need of a good history of porn book!
