Mutual Pleasure

Sex is the only activity I can think of in which you receive pleasure and give pleasure at the same time. In other words, doing it to someone else feels good to you too, at the very moment you're doing it.

There are other things that seem like they could fit this bill. Certainly, giving my lover a back rub feels good to her and I enjoy it too, but let's be serious. I'm doing it because I'm expecting she's going to do something good to me in return. Or if not, if I'm just doing it because I like the feel of her skin under my hands, well, that's sexual, isn't it?

What about charity? I need help and you give it to me. You feel good helping me, and I'm glad to accept what you give, right? Yeah, sure. I end up feeling like a sponge, and you end up resenting me. You're smiling because you feel self-righteous and superior, and I'm not smiling-I'm gritting my teeth.

No, when you get down to it, only sex is mutually and simultaneously gratifying. Oh, there might be one other thing-nursing. Nursing mothers tell me that having their baby feed at their breast is very peaceful and pleasurable, and I'm sure the baby enjoys it too. But substitute an adult lover for that peaceful baby and what do you have? Sex again.

In fact, simultaneous giving and receiving of pleasure might be the best definition for what we know as sex. We immediately recognize such behavior as sexual in nature. It's the only time it happens.
