Got a look at Marilynn Monroe's keister in an old movie the other night. It's a nice ass, to be sure, but was rather disconcertingly wide. Her whole body, in fact, seemed kind of puffy and pillowy, kind of slack and loose. She was a beautiful, sexy woman, but I wonder if she could get away with looking like that today.

Interesting take, and lots of ideas here that I want to comment on, but I will be brief or try.

I think Marilyn would be just as welcome now as ever. After all, the average woman is much larger than the 105 pound waif and J Lo is one alt-ideal. Despite Marilyn's persona when alive, ( an innocent, naive and dumb blonde persona much guarded by the studio system) she was exceptionally intelligent, which was not a hot commodity in her time, nor particulary marketable. As an actress today, she might have been the Meryl Streep. As a sex symbol? That's a hard one because the whole metaphor of Marilyn rests not so much on her hourglass body as the 'waif' personality that encompasses the girl that needs a man to take care of her. Is it the body type that's so popular, or does the current skinny ideal simply symbolize the same thing Marilyn encompassed symbollically?

I had a hot session on the back seat of a bus with MM - so lay off, she's mine. Ok - it was in the 50's and the only other woman around were French or Swedish so someone who spoke the lingo had that added bonus. Ignore the reality. Colin

I agree with the "welcome as ever" but by todays standards Marilyn was a waif.

Let's face it, in 2007 most of our women are GROSSLY overweight and will pay for that by dieing young. Tough, but at least it will leave room for a new generation that understands that 12 inch pizzas are not to be eaten as a light snack.

Marilyn weighed in at about 120 to 140 pounds depending on how much she was snorting or boozing, poor girl. Even at the top of that range she would not have gone past a size 14. Most of the time she could probably get away with a size 12 or even a 10.

But size 12 is about the limit for cries of anorexia these days. Who is calling those pitches? I think our fat ladies.

Please don't be fooled by the pub, most of the mags are run by women.

I lived and married in a part of the world where people still eat when they are hungry, and stop when they are full. Average weight for a mature woman is about 110 pounds.

Here, the average is a size 10. Mine runs to size 6 or 8.

Back home in the US thats a teen.
