Legalize It!

For years and years there has been a debate about whether or not prostitution
should be legalized in the United States. There is no doubt that the world’s
oldest profession will continue to go on regardless of whether some cronies
in Washington decide to recognize it or not but the debate got me thinking of
the merits of finally legalizing what goes on everyday in the country. For starters,
the main argument in favor of sanctioning sex for sale is that with such legalization
comes the ability for regulation. This basically means that there could be state
offices mandating health screenings for the prostitutes as well as eliminating
the predatory and oftentimes dangerous associations of prostitutes with their
pimps.
To me, this sounds like a winning situation because it would certainly decrease
the incidence of rampant sexually transmitted diseases on the nighttime circuit
and it could cut down on the murder rates of the girls of the night. On the
other hand, the moralists vehemently deny that such regulation outweighs the
moral degradation that would certainly ensue from such sanctioning. They argue
that with the legalization of prostitution, the moral fabric of the country
would somehow unwind and families would cease to exist as people went outside
their marital bedroom for sexual fulfillment.
This argument falls flat because it basically denies that such excursions go
on anyway, even without legalization. I guess they feel that without the penalty
of arrest for buying sex then more people would be apt to take advantage of
the services being offered. But it seems that if someone secretly fantasizes
about going out and buying sex instead of being faithful to their partner, then
that hints at issues that are already existent in their marriage and whether
or not something is legalized will do little to alleviate those issues. So it
seems like making regulations of the industry enforceable is a good thing and
the lawmakers should take these arguments under consideration since it has gone
on for centuries and will continue to go on with or without their sanction,
so they may as well start to reign in the effects of anarchy on the streets.
