strange product

The above picture is not directly linked to the following story, but the product it shows could possibly help those looking for better employment in China. According to a Reuters story (12/28/05) out of Beijing, political correctness is not necessarily flourishing in China's hiring practices and there are few laws to protect prospective employees.

For example, according to the 12-year cycle of Chinese astrological signs, bad luck comes to anyone sharing the same animal sign as the current year. Therefore, according to state media, since on the upcoming Chinese Lunar New Year in late January 2006 the year's sign changes from rooster to dog, companies have refused hiring anyone unlucky enough to have been born in a previous year of the dog to avoid misfortune. People born in 1982 and 1970, for example, are unlucky puppies as far as employment in 2006.

Other reasons barring employment have including things like height and blood type. Employers aren't just superstitious or afraid of the vertically challenged. They discriminate on other equally supeficial or sexist basis too.

In one exceptional case, women applying for government jobs in central Hunan province had to have symmetrical breasts. Myself, I must admit I did have one female supervisor that has uneven cups with nipples that pointed in two different directions. I did find it impeded work since it was rather distracting. I felt as if her tits were always winking at me or they constantly walked off half-cocked. However, rather than losing her job or not hiring her in the first place, a no braless t-shirts rule would have fixed the problem considerably I think. However, I digress.

Hunan scrapped the rule in the face of public outrage last year. Nonetheless, despite demands for stronger anti-discrimination laws protecting those seeking employment, for now, none have been forthcoming.

At least for me, I can still get a job in China next year. Despite being called the Groundhog, my Chinese astrological sign is the Pig. Maybe I should ask my boss for a few extra Yuan for being so lucky.
