Doin' it for themselves

In every medium there has been a specific moment where a woman has made an impact on the changing face of popular culture. Of course, I have to admit that it's odd, albeit not surprising, that we never learn about historical women in our history classes. When it comes to music, Debbie Harry, and for those who don't recall she was the lead singer for 70's punk band Blondie, has always been an admirable figure that changed a lot in the history of rock. It's never easy for women in industries like music or film, which are dominated by men and yet some ladies are indeed pivotal players in how things have and do change.

While I'm quite familiar with the inroads women have made into various mediums and occupations, I am not all that knowledgeable about whether or not they have or are changing the face of Internet porn. Certain women like Heidi Fleiss are changing the cathouse business and certainly Annie Sprinkle, among others, has done something for adult films and performance art, but what about the frontier of the wild, wild web?

More recently I have been hearing of women's Internet porn. My immediate, and I must admit prejudicial thought, was that women's Internet porn might be likened to baby blue movies or even Douglas Sirk melodramas, which theorist Laura Mulvey refers to as the genre of the mise-en-scene and a site of emotions. However, it would not surprise me to discover, like the difference between a testosterone driven sports film and the estrogen based melodrama, that Internet porn made for and by women would have significantly different narrative and visual conventions, as well as alternate representations of women and desire.

I recently came upon a cool site called For The Girls. While the site is an online magazine, it did feature films by Candida Royale who writes, produces and directs movies geared toward female audiences. There are also in-depth articles about women who are making erotic films, as well as sensual and hot stories written by women. Of course, this is one of the few sites I've come across, so I'll have to keep my eyes open for more if only to answer my own questions about the difference between male and female Internet porn, aside from the obvious that sites made by women ultimately have better looking guys! :)
