It's a great idea: sex toys that hook up to your computer, controlled by someone else on their computer. They could be in the other room or halfway around the world, it wouldn't matter. All they'd have to do is hit a key and your toy would start vibrating or buzzing or throbbing as they commanded. You could lie back and let them service you as they desired enjoying this meatware-hardware interface. It gives new meaning to cybersex. Suddenly your instant message becomes an Instant Massage.

These things have been around since the late nineties or so, and the first generation was reviewed in Salon magazine in 2000. They weren't too good. There were problems with the software and problems with the hardware, and the very design of the devices left something to be desired. Mostly they were crude plug-in dildos or artificial pussies or nipple-suckers. Control was pretty much limited to slow-fast.

The newer generation of toys is more ambitious. Sinulator, for example, offers half a dozen different kinds of toys, but their triumph is a high-tech control panel that works with a rabbit habit vibrator to control vibration and rotation and allow for some pretty fine adjustments. Their software is compatible with PC's, Macs. Linux, and even Palms.

The newest trend is to go open source with the software and let everyone in on it. Open Dildonics provides a place for software and hardware developers to get together and work on their latest cyberorgasmics. They provide instructions on turning sex toys into cybervibes that can be controlled by a lover or stranger miles away, and they hope one day to enable control of such devices by Bluetooth and WIFI.
