Conservatives, Liberals And The Adult Entertainment Industry

In response to what is becoming a global economic crisis, the Liberal Party of Canada is attempting to protect Canadians from a minority Conservative government whose agenda does not, according to the Liberals, appear to be creating jobs or putting food on the tables of the millions of Canadians who need help. But are they responding to all Canadians, or just a select few? Here at Rabbit's Reviews, we are as concerned as anyone with the plight of the average working person, as we are just as vulnerable to economic hardship as any other industry.

At OnProbation.ca, you can find the Liberal party's response to the policies of the Conservative government. In addition to pointing out where they feel the current government is failing its people, the Liberals have posted facts about our current job market and projections for the future. It might surprise Canadians to learn that they are actually losing more jobs per capita than Americans are.

According to Statistics Canada, in the last two months, 6,000 jobs per million citizens have been lost in Canada, while in the USA, that number is closer to 4,000, as indicated by the US Bureau of Labor Standards.

Bailout packages are being proposed to ensure the safety of jobs across North America and, while many sectors of the economy are being addressed, people who work in the adult entertainment industry are being ignored.

While statistics are not immediately available for how many people are employed by the porn industry, at least 12,000 people are employed in Adult industries in California alone.

The Liberal website states that "The crisis is about people." In addition to performers and producers, the Canadian adult industry employs a wide range of professionals. There are producers, camera operators and lighting experts. You'll find marketing specialists, accountants and SEO professionals whose skill is unrivaled in any online business. Real people all.

There are writers, graphic designers and webmasters who make their living in the adult industry. Each of them are as deserving of having their way of making their living protected as those who make their living by assembling automobiles or in Science and Technology.

While the Liberal website addresses the problems of certain industries, there are always those that are left out, including the adult entertainment industry. For example, funding to Artists in Canada has been cut significantly, even though, based on the 2006 census, artists outnumbered auto workers.

It's time that governments around the world recognized the adult entertainment industry as a legitimate business that employs real people who are as vulnerable to economic instability as anyone else in any other industry. Without pontificating upon how adult entertainment contributes to the general morale and sexual health of the population as a whole, one must confront the economic realities that people employed in the industry are facing.

The porn industry is facing the same challenges as other industries. While the auto industry must respond to demand for cleaner, more affordable and environmentally friendly cars, the porn industry has to respond to challenges it faces due to piracy and increasingly ubiquitous tube sites.

It's not up to the government to create strategies for more effective business practices for any industry, but it is the job of the government to ensure that industries stay afloat while they retool their strategies and keep people employed.

It may be important to note as well that, unlike many industries, the adult entertainment business does not contribute to climate change. No adult website has ever spilled into a bay, killing all the wildlife that comes in its path. Adult entertainment has never been responsible for higher than normal occurrences of asthma or cancer rates in any community. We contribute to the greater good of our society.

If any government is to gain our support, they are going to have to stop ignoring the real people that work in this industry and start making good on their promises to help their citizens. Whether or not, as Larry Flynt suggested, the porn industry sees any kind of stimulus package, the government still needs to find a way to respond to the recession and the adult entertainment industry.

Without taking sides, it's unlikely that any kind of conservative government will see the value in responding to the need for economic stimulus in the adult industry. Prime Minister Stephen Harper stated that "...the primary wealth creation of the future will come from private industry," but he has also stated that he believes, above all, in "freedom, family and faith." While conservatives take the moral high ground, the economy falls to pieces.

It's a good thing that there is a political group that wants to be responsible to its citizens, but no government should ever ignore its citizens based on ideas rooted in religious morality. It's important to recognize that our freedoms extend to our right to engage in legitimate business in the way that we see fit.

Those of us that are employed by the adult entertainment industry will find ways to ensure that we will always be able to bring you the kind of high-quality entertainment that you have come to expect from us. It's up to the government and its critics to ensure that those working in the adult entertainment industry are given the same opportunities to bring you those products as anyone else gets.
