Bouncing For Loss Of Dollars

I don't go out to clubs that much anymore. Well, I don't go out to dance clubs. I prefer sitting around in a funky pub and talking, or watching a live band, even though I love dancing. However, this last Saturday night I decided what the hell. We went to the gay village where there are a lot of different mixed places that are fun, and they are all in the same vicinity. Straight clubs seem to be more spread out across the city and none of us felt like spending more money on cabs than on drinks.

However, there was one place we decided to go at the last minute just for old times sake to see what was happening. I noticed there was an attitude change among the bouncers at that particular club. Once a place of good-time lesbians, it seemed there was a new breed of posturing bouncers with attitude problems manning the door. Basically, they were picking and choosing who gets to go in, and who is not allowed to go in for whatever lame excuse they decided to muster. I watched them hassle people, including us.

There was barely even a line up, so it was odd that they should be power tripping. I mean it's not as if the club was Studio 54! In fact, this was a skanky, dark and dingy club that I always remember being terrified to actually see in the daylight. We decided to pass on it, and we went to a couple of friendlier places in the community, and had a blast.

Still, I thought that bouncers were supposed to be there for security reasons, and not to turn people off of wanting to spend their dollars. It reminded me of a pervasive feminist attitude that permeated the lesbian community when I was in University. I distinctly recall that guys, even if with female friends, were not allowed into a club unless they expressed that they were gay. How ridiculous is that? I remember it was an attitude that I detested then, and being at this one club over the weekend, I wondered if it was an attitude that's somehow resurfacing. There are arguments for why they do this, I know, but it does not mean I agree with them, so I guess they lose my female dollars.
